A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck just off the coast of Sand Point near Popof Island on Wednesday afternoon, July 16, prompting immediate concern from both state and federal agencies.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the quake occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time, shaking the central region of the Alaska Peninsula. The epicenter was located offshore, raising alarms over potential aftershocks and coastal hazards.
In response, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a tsunami warning for much of the peninsula and parts of southern mainland Alaska, including areas as far north as Anchorage. Residents were urged to stay alert for emergency updates and take precautionary measures as necessary.
According to Michigan Technological University, quakes measuring between 7.0 and 7.9 on the Richter scale are classified as major and can inflict serious structural damage. On average, only 10 to 15 earthquakes of this magnitude occur globally each year.
Officials continue to monitor the situation. No major damage or injuries have been reported at this time, but assessments are ongoing.
