The New Yeshiva High School of Los Angeles: A New Beginning, A Lasting Vision

There are moments when a community recognizes that something new is needed—and has the courage to build it.

The New Yeshiva High School of Los Angeles began with a simple but powerful vision: to create a place where young men could grow in Torah, academics, character, and confidence, while feeling genuinely cared for and valued every step of the way.

The school opened its doors with just 11 boys. Small in number, but big in vision, this first group of talmidim represents the beginning of what we hope will become a lasting institution in the Los Angeles Jewish community.

At the heart of the Yeshiva is a commitment to creating an environment where Torah is not simply studied—it is loved.

A Beit Midrash That Begins the Day

One of the unique features of the Yeshiva is the presence of five Beit Midrash boys each morning. These boys join the high school students for davening, breakfast, and learning, helping create a vibrant Beit Midrash atmosphere from the very beginning of the school day.

The goal is to establish an environment in which Torah learning feels alive and natural. The high school students see older and more experienced B’nei Torah learning alongside them, creating an atmosphere of growth, seriousness, and excitement.

The 9th grade Rebbi is Rabbi Samel, whose warmth, dedication, and love of Torah are central to the spiritual experience of the students. His role goes far beyond teaching a curriculum. He works to develop a relationship with each talmid and to help every boy discover the joy and meaning that can be found in Torah learning.

Leadership With a Personal Touch

The Yeshiva is guided by a dedicated team of rabbinic and educational leaders.

Rabbi Elchanan Shoff, the Menahel, brings a deep commitment to chinuch and to creating an environment where students can thrive. His vision for the school is rooted in the belief that serious Torah education and a warm, emotionally healthy school culture belong together.

Rabbi Ishal, the Dean, provides additional leadership and guidance, and oversees the Yeshiva's administration and financial affairs, ensuring that the school operates with professionalism, responsibility, and sound fiscal management.

Rabbi Stulberger, as the head of the Yeshiva's Vaad HaChinuch, provides valuable guidance and perspective on the school's educational and chinuch direction. His experience and wisdom are an important resource to the administration, and his ongoing advice and consultation help ensure that the Yeshiva remains focused on its mission of providing each talmid with a strong Torah foundation and a warm, meaningful educational experience.

Together, the leadership team has created a school where the talmidim are known—not simply by their names or grades, but as individuals with unique strengths, personalities, challenges, and dreams.

Excellence in Secular Studies

The Yeshiva's commitment to Torah does not come at the expense of academic excellence.

The Secular Studies Department is led by Dr. Dearing, bringing professionalism, expertise, and high expectations to the General Studies program.

The goal is to provide students with a strong academic foundation that prepares them for the future while maintaining the school's primary commitment to Torah and Jewish values.

The Yeshiva believes that a young man should be challenged intellectually in every area of his education. Our students should graduate with strong Torah skills, strong academic skills, confidence in their abilities, and the tools necessary to succeed in the next stage of their lives.

More Than a Classroom

A high school experience should be about more than sitting in classrooms.

That is why the New Yeshiva High School places a strong emphasis on extracurricular activities, sports, social programming, trips, and other opportunities for students to develop their interests and talents.

These activities are an important part of creating a healthy school community. They allow students to build friendships, discover new abilities, develop leadership skills, and simply enjoy being teenagers in a warm Jewish environment.

The goal is balance: a place where a boy can be serious about his Gemara in the morning, challenged academically during the day, and then enjoy sports, activities, and time with his friends.

A Place Where Every Talmid Matters

Perhaps the most important thing that distinguishes the New Yeshiva High School is something that cannot be measured on a transcript.

It is the feeling a student has when he walks through the doors.

He knows that he matters.

The Yeshiva was created to be a place where students feel the love of Torah, but also the love of the people who are teaching them Torah.

A boy should not leave school thinking that Torah is merely another subject he has to pass. He should leave with a feeling that Torah is something that belongs to him—that it is meaningful, inspiring, and capable of shaping the person he wants to become.

The same is true of the relationships between teachers and students. A successful yeshiva is not built only on great classrooms and excellent curricula. It is built on relationships, trust, encouragement, and genuine care.

When a rebbi knows his talmid, when a menahel believes in him, when teachers recognize his strengths, and when his classmates become his friends, the school becomes much more than an institution.

It becomes a community.

The New Yeshiva High School of Los Angeles is only at the beginning of its journey.

Eleven boys may be the first chapter, but they are helping write the story of something much bigger.

The hope is to build a yeshiva where generations of young men will look back and say that their high school years helped shape who they became. A place where they developed a love for Torah, a commitment to mitzvot, strong academic abilities, meaningful friendships, and the confidence to take their next steps in life.
