Jewish high school basketball teams from across the United States and Canada came to the Fairfax district this past week for the 12th annual Steve Glouberman Z"L Basketball Tournament, hosted by Shalhevet High School from October 21 to 24.

The four-day tournament, played at Shalhevet's campus at 910 South Fairfax Avenue and nearby courts, combines boys' and girls' games with a Shabbaton, according to Shalhevet. The school says the tournament honors Steve Glouberman, "whom we lost too soon," a lover of basketball remembered as a true team player on and off the court.

The roster

Shalhevet's official list of participating teams names 10 boys' teams and eight girls' teams:

The home team is listed on the roster as Fairfax. Shalhevet has not released a final count of players, coaches and chaperones who attended.

On the court

The boys' tournament opened with a one-point game. Fuchs Mizrachi, of Beachwood, Ohio, beat Fairfax 50-49, the Shalhevet Boiling Point reported. Fairfax took a 41-40 lead on a three-pointer by senior co-captain Judah Stern before Mizrachi's Moshe Jacobs hit a three to put his team back ahead.

"The energy in the stands for the home team was amazing, but Mizrachi took the lead early on and just ran with it," said Rabbi Ari Schwarzberg, Shalhevet's 12th grade dean, who announced the game.

Shalhevet has not released championship results for either division, details of the Shabbaton, or how visiting teams were hosted.
