( Yes, it’s that time of year again.)

This time of year the world lights

up

In many different ways,

With candles, stars, and winter songs,

Such different Holidays.

Some gather round a glowing tree,

Some watch the moon grow new,

Some light their menorahs, some share a feast,

Most have prayers said, too.

Each holiday tells its own story

Of history, hope, and care.

And though the customs may not match,

In each, much heart is there.

So let us treat each others’ joy

With kindness and true cheer—

Respecting every sacred day

that visits this time of year.

For us, Hanukkah is symbolized by light. We enjoy public menorah lighting, music, and festivities, seasonal food, and fun.

Some of us have some time off of work, and can use it to spread light:

Maybe visit “shut ins” or help a friend who needs to work but has kids home on holiday from school?

We also need to remember to respect the holidays of others by acknowledging their special days, thanking employees for their service to us throughout  their calendar year, affording them time off for their holidays, and wishing them and their families happiness.

Long after our Hanukkah is over, we can take that light that we infuse ourselves with for eight nights, and help make the world a better place
