Dear Wig Maker,
I’m reaching out to share a challenge that I believe others may also face: the physical pain caused by wearing a wig. The discomfort, which feels like a tight, persistent pressure on my scalp, often begins as soon as I put the wig on. I can usually manage only about three hours before the pain becomes too intense, making it difficult to wear the wig for extended periods. This issue has been frustrating, as I love the look and versatility wigs offer, but the physical toll is hard to ignore. Do you have any recommendations or techniques to help alleviate this physical discomfort and make wearing a wig a more comfortable experience?
Sincerely,
Cap Curious in West Hollywood
Dear Cap Curious in West Hollywood,
Thank you for reaching out about your wig-wearing experience. I understand how challenging it can be when discomfort sets in, and I’m happy to offer some solutions to help ease the pressure.
First, let’s consider the wig’s construction. Are you using clips or combs to secure it? These can sometimes cause tension and stress on the scalp. To address this, we often sew a non-slip velvet band into our wigs, which provides a gentle grip without the need for clips or combs, significantly reducing discomfort.
Another factor could be the amount of hair you’re tucking under the wig. If you have a lot of hair, we can install a small fabric pocket near the nape area to hold a ponytail or bun, relieving tension at the back of your head.
For those with heightened sensitivity, opting for a slightly larger cap size can make a big difference. A proper fit is crucial when selecting a wig, as even a small adjustment can enhance comfort for extended wear.
I’d love to hear more about your specific wig and experience to tailor these suggestions further. Feel free to reply with any details, and we can explore additional options to ensure your wig feels as good as it looks.
With love + great hair,
Tallie
