Q: Am I Trying Too Hard?

Dear Wig Maker,

This might sound silly, but every time I wear my sheitel, I wonder if I’m doing too much. I used to throw on a headscarf and call it a day, but now that I’m in a new job, think corporate office, high-gloss, heels-clicking-the-hallway, I feel this pressure to always look on. I invested in a beautiful wig (okay, two), and I actually love them… but sometimes I look in the mirror and wonder: Am I trying too hard? Is this sheitel wearing me instead of the other way around?

How do I stay tznius but also feel confident, polished, and true to myself, without losing the plot?

Signed,

Overthinking in Culver City

Dear Overthinking,

First of all , you’re not silly. You're asking the real question that almost no one says out loud:

Where’s the line between showing up and feeling like yourself?

Let me tell you something, a good sheitel should never feel like performance art. It should feel like slipping into your favorite dress: elevated, effortless, and completely you.

Now, glam is not the enemy. You’re in a job where confidence matters, where presence matters. If your sheitel helps you walk taller and command that boardroom energy, amazing. You’re not “trying too hard”, you’re trying on purpose. There’s a difference.

But if the wig feels like it’s shouting louder than you are? That’s a style issue, not a you issue. Maybe the color needs softening. Maybe the cut needs reshaping. Maybe the layers are screaming when they should be whispering. Let’s tweak it until it feels like an extension of you, not a character you play.

We are not in the business of hair theatre. We are in the business of matching outside to inside. You can be sleek, modern, powerful, and still be modest, still be sincere, still be you.

So no, you’re not trying too hard. You’re just figuring out what fits, and that takes guts and a little bit of play. Come in, let’s have fun with it.

Because the best kind of sheitel is the one that lets you forget you’re wearing one.

With love + and great hair,

Tallie
