On Wednesday, July 16, 45 women gathered at Knesset Israel for an evening of learning and connection hosted by Sharsheret — a nonprofit supporting Jewish women, men, and families facing breast and ovarian cancer. The event, Exploring Our Jewish Genes, brought together voices from science and faith to empower attendees with critical knowledge.
The program featured Rabbi Dr. Jason Weiner, Senior Rabbi and Executive Director of Spiritual Care at Cedars-Sinai, and Bracha Rich, CGC, Education and Outreach Manager at JScreen. Rich shared insights into the elevated genetic cancer risks in the Ashkenazi Jewish population and offered practical ways for women to be proactive about their health through genetic testing and understanding family history. One in 40 Ashkenazi Jews — both men and women — carries a BRCA gene mutation, nearly 10 times the rate of the general population, making Jewish families significantly more susceptible to hereditary breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
Rabbi Weiner addressed the ethical and religious considerations that arise when Jewish law meets modern medicine. He explained how halacha helps guide the community in embracing medical advancements while staying true to enduring Jewish values of self-care and communal responsibility. His remarks helped attendees see how tradition can offer clarity and comfort in navigating complex health decisions.
This event reflects Sharsheret’s mission to educate and connect. Attendees left with actionable tools, new perspective, and the reassurance of belonging to a strong, supportive community.
