What began as every family's worst nightmare has ended with an outpouring of gratitude to Hashem. Jeanne Rus Litvin, a Los Angeles woman who had been missing for nine days, has been found alive and is currently receiving care at Community Hospital of Huntington Park.
Litvin, a well-known writer for the Jewish Press who lives with dementia, was last seen leaving her home on S. Alta Vista Blvd. on the morning of Wednesday, April 15. She reportedly covered approximately 10 miles on foot that day alone, making the search extraordinarily difficult.
What followed was a testament to the power of Klal Yisrael.
At the request of Hatzolah of Los Angeles, roughly 30 volunteers from Rockland Chaveirim flew in from Monsey in the early hours of Monday morning. Led by Coordinator Yossi Margareten and Search and Rescue Coordinator Moshe Jacobowitz, the team worked around the clock — 24 hours a day — combing challenging and at times unsafe areas of the city. They reviewed surveillance camera footage covering nearly nine miles of ground and deployed drones and specialized search technology to piece together her movements.
Their tireless dedication paid off.
She was found alive, reportedly at a hospital in Huntington Park, although this has not yet been substantiated.
The hospital where she's being treated is located nearly an hour's walk from her home, a testament to how far she had traveled and how difficult this search truly was.
The selfless mesirus nefesh of the Rockland Chaveirim volunteers, alongside Hatzolah of Los Angeles and the many community members who joined the effort, is a beautiful reminder of who we are as a people.
These volunteers left their families, traveled across the country, and gave everything they had, and because of them, a family has their loved one back.
May Jeanne Rus Litvin have a refuah sheleimah, and may her family know only simchos going forward.
